Can
You See the Music?
What
do you think about when you hear the symphony
perform? What images form in your mind as you
listen to your favorite music on a quiet evening in
the summer? Music has a special way of evoking
images and capturing our imaginations. The Lakeland
Youth Symphony invites our children to visually
express their music in our annual "Can You See the
Music?" workshop. "See the Music" is one part of
the Lakeland Youth Symphony's exploration of music
through the senses.
This year, while listening to Aaron Copeland's music, our young Suzuki and orchestra students painted what they saw in their hearts. In this workshop, our Music Director, Debra Short Seftel, introduced our students to Aaron Copeland's life and his work. Local artist Susan Sopira, followed up with an art lesson and helped the students make a wonderful array of colors to use on their canvases. As the composer's music played, the children painted what they heard and felt. What a wonderful experience!
