The Lakeland Youth Symphony auditions all existing students and prospective new students in the spring to place them in the appropriate group for the fall.  New students can be heard by special appointment if they have missed the scheduled dates.  Each student should prepare a solo which demonstrates their current level of proficiency as well as a few major scales.  The student will also be asked to play a suitable piece of sight reading.  Auditions are very low-key and are conducted by the professional staff to determine the best placement for the student technically and socially.  Lakeland tries to place all students as long as they are studying privately and will be comfortable in one of our groups.
