Chamber Ensembles
Overview
After our holiday concert in December, we turn to chamber music for 5 weeks of rehearsals. Conductors divide students into chamber groups based on ability level and instrumentation, then distribute level-appropriate music to learn over the winter break. When rehearsals begin again in January, students meet in chamber groups to work together on the musicality of their pieces under the tutelage of a chamber coach.
We agree with Paul Katz of the New England Conservatory who said, “Yes, chamber music is an essential part of every musician’s education—how to listen, lead, follow, and play, both as a soloist and to enhance another’s primary line, integrate yourself as part of the whole through your own personal voice, and make music collaboratively with interpersonal chemistry.”
Our students LOVE this opportunity, which allows them to connect with the music and with each other in a much deeper way. With no additional fee, professional coaching, and an outreach concert at the end of the program, Lakeland’s Chamber Program is a unique opportunity with unparalleled results in the youth orchestra world!
