Symphony Orchestra
Overview
The Symphony Orchestra is a full symphonic orchestra that includes strings, brass, winds and percussion students. Membership in the SO is reserved for outstanding players whose technical level is advanced, show strong musicality and musicianship, and are capable of the discipline necessary to perform in one of New Jersey’s premier youth orchestras. Our students are challenged to look beyond the notes and rhythms to understand the impact and message of their music.

PERFORMANCES: Members perform in Lakeland Youth Symphony’s Winter and Spring Concerts and may participate in additional outreach performances, special events, and educational trips throughout the year. Additionally, members have the opportunity to compete in the Jr. & Sr. Concerto Competition.
Audition Info
All students audition annually. Auditions are used for ensemble placement and help ensure that each student is challenged appropriately. With multiple ensemble levels, Lakeland Youth Symphony strives to provide meaningful musical opportunities for students across a wide range of ages and experience levels.
Audition Requirements
Strings Scales:
Separate bows and each note will be played as a quarter note with the quarter note = 104mm
Violin: 9 Major scales & arpeggios: D, Eb, E, F in 2 octaves;
G, Ab, A, Bb, C in 3 octaves
Viola: 9 major scales & arpeggios: G, Ab, A, Bb, in 2 octaves;
C, D, Eb, E, F in 3 octaves
Cello: 9 major scales & arpeggios: G, Ab, A, Bb, in 2 octaves;
C, D, Eb, E, F in 3 octaves
Bass: 9 major scales & arpeggios: G, E, F, Ab, in 2 octaves*;
A, Bb, C, D, Eb in 1 octave*
*No octave drop
Woodwind and Brass Scales:
Scales should be played in eighth notes at quarter note = 80
with ascending notes tongued and descending notes slurred
A chromatic scale starting from the lowest pitch within your range to the highest
One major scale that features at least 2 sharps in the key signature (minimum of 2 octaves)
One melodic minor scale (minimum of 2 octaves) in the key of your choice
Percussion:
One (minimum of 2 octaves) scale on mallet percussion of your choice
One solo piece on either snare drum or timpani
One solo piece on mallet percussion (xylophone or bells) – Goldenberg or Whaley etudes are suitable.
Solo Piece:
One movement from a concerto or sonata that shows your current playing ability. Conductor will choose a section from the movement.
Suggestions: NJ All - State or Region HS solos, solos from or the level of Suzuki Volume 6 and beyond.
